Our new vicar is at a preaching conference in Lexington this weekend so we had a simpler service this morning, just what they call “Morning Prayer”. Without a properly ordained person, we can’t have the normal service with communion. That is a bit of a question mark in the mind of this Protestant, and I’m going to ask the reasons why this is so. But I digress.
The simple morning prayer service is the sack lunch of Episcopal church services–stripped down, simple. No processional, no acolytes, no communion. The people work their way through the readings and the responses and the prayers, led by someone from the congregation. It was wonderful even in its simplicity. I come out feeling like I’ve been reset to my factory settings–back in proper relationship to God and man.
