Cactus, anyone? Manzanita?

How long has it been since we’ve had any rain?  My yard is dried out, brown and dying.  I water the roses by hand every other day, they’re doing ok, but the rest…just pathetic.  I’ve never seen anything like this since we left California.

About katiekind

Enjoying the second half of life. I have three sons who are the apples of my eye and a wonderful husband of 35 years--those are the important things. Long ago, out of the blue, I became a Christian. It was something I never planned on, but what joy it has been. I do website development and I like to read and garden and paint and I love beauty and truth.

  1. I’ve decided to just start over next year. Between the freeze and now this drought, I think I’ve lost most of my plants. Even my phlox have taken a hit. It is just pitiful.

My phlox look pitiful, like bedraggled refugees. I think my rhododendrons are dying too. One azalea is dead for sure. *Sigh*

Your idea of just ringing down the curtain and starting over next spring is a good one. I wonder how the farmers are making out.

  3. Well, I know that they were very hopeful for the corn crop because the price of corn went sky-high with ethanol research. But then this drought and I’ve heard that the corn only half made. Most of the soybeans are totally lost. We have soybeans next to us that aren’t even 6 inches tall. It is really sad. Mark says we have two options. (1) it will rain eventually or (2) we’ve had a climatological shift and west ky is about to become a desert and we’ll all just move away because there won’t be any water. I have my doubts about #1.

Did I ever tell you R8 wants to be a cactus farmer? Cactus farmer and cowboy historian. (And my Dad’s mountain in AZ is covered with manzanita, and it makes me happy just seeing that word typed out.)

Those sound like worthy, not to mention compatible, ambitions.
